Recent study on Fixed Operations and what it reveals about Service Sales, Profitability and more...

Recent studies show that Service Advisors that hand out menus during the write up process experience an increase in Customer Maintenance Sales. The study also shows that this corresponds to an increase in the Service Advisors pay.

These recent studies also show that Technicians that completed a Multipoint Inspection on every vehicle flagged more hours than Technicians who did not. An interesting side note to the study, Technicians who completed the most Multipoint Inspections made the… Continue

Who’s Writing Your Online Ads?

I recently saw a vehicle advertised on a dealer website that caught my attention. This pre-owned car was advertised as a “CarFax One Owner”.  Upon further investigation, I discovered that the “one owner” was a rental car company.

Even though the “one owner” statement may have been technically true, the description of the vehicle blew my mind: “With just one previous owner, who treated this vehicle like a member of the family, you'll really hit the jackpot when you drive home…

Does your FB page SU$%?

I've seen some car dealer FB pages with very few fans, infrequent updates and overall very boring with no chance of attracting people or potential customers.

Shipp Marketing & Media recently released a new ad campaign for one of our clients, Orr Kia. As with many local Kia dealer ads, we take a fun approach and we have incorporated that approach in our Facebook page.

For this particular…

Perception is a Powerful Force

In real estate it is location, location, location.  In the retail sales world, it is perception, perception, perception.  Every one of your consumers wants to have a individualize experience when doing business with your organization.  I like to call it the “Disney” experience since Disney has set the… Continue

Helping Goldilocks Find the Right Car

Below is one of my favorite tales of two dealerships. It is a favorite story because I believe both dealerships had the best of intentions, just one made a positive impact and the other a not so positive impact on how one woman in a vast world of consumers experienced buying her first brand new car.

The…

Best Buy a Competitor?

I read an article today about Best Buy wanting to sell electric vehicles. The company has already "won contracts to install home chargers for the Ford Focus Electric and Mitsubishi i."

Dealers, how would you feel if Best Buy became a competitor, especially if it was able to sell electric vehicles from major car makers?

Reputation Management Is Not Rocket Science

There are a number of good reasons for operating an ethical and legally compliant dealership, not the least of which is staying out of a courtroom.  Perhaps the most important - and most often overlooked - reason is increased customer satisfaction.  There are times when an employee may feel that he or she came out the winner by bending the rules a little, but what about the dealership’s reputation?  What about the customers who were mislead?  It seems like there might be some losers in the…

Virtual Duct Tape in a Global Economy

When a friend posted this picture on Facebook, first I laughed and thought back to those crazy college days with pranks and practical jokes involving duct tape.  Then my thoughts wandered into the humor of my adult life, where I joke about things being held together with duct tape and Popsicle sticks.  Then it dawned on…

Can I Get a Witness!?!?!?!

I never question the freshness of a candy bar when I buy it.  If the candy bar is not up to my standard, I toss it.  It would “cost” me more in effort than what I spent on the candy bar to report my dissatisfaction.  When it comes to big ticket items, there is a lot more at “risk” and customer satisfaction becomes a turning point in the decision making process.  So how can a… Continue

An Experience Can Sell a Car

While enjoying the warmer weather with my buddies this weekend, I made a new car enthusiast friend out of a complete stranger.  The conversation got started when he asked me if I had ever heard of the Nissan GTR.  I looked at him and exclaimed, “Of course!  I have a near meltdown every time I see one.”  We both go on and on about where we have… Continue

Thinking Green Leads to Personal and Professional Growth

When someone claims to be “green”, what first comes to your mind?  They are making an effort to reduce their carbon foot print on mother earth?  They are a vegetarian?  They are a naturalist that protects trees and woodland creatures?  When I hear the word “green” used to describe someone, the first thought that comes to mind is "green pea" or “newbie”.  Like a… Continue
