EDITORIAL & OPINIONS Beat the Dealer Is the Obama administration turning Chrysler into a patronage machine? By JAMES TARANTO / WSJ
When people talk about the problems that have driven Chrysler to bankruptcy and General Motors to the brink thereof, they usually have in mind the companies' excessive commitments to those who build their cars: the high wages, lavish benefits and irrational work rules written into union contracts. A less-discussed problem is the companies'…

Bob Cockerham
testified in front of the U.S. Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship, which oversees the Small Business Administrationon (SBA), on March 19, 2009, with two goals in mind:
1) To get the SBA's loan program to be expanded so more small businesses (including many dealers) could have access to SBA loans
and
2) To get the SBA to include…

In todays Houston Chronicle there is an open letter to the public from the Chrysler Dealer Council that backs Chrylser efforts to close dealerships. Personally, I think the council positions is absurd and pretty much seals the fate of the dealers on the "list". Has anyone any history behind this?

Our only GM authorized service and repair shops closed up this week, and that was without getting "the letter". Scary times. My grandfather sold Chevy's @ that lot decades ago under a previous owner. It's been a GM lot for as long as anyone in town can remember. Best of luck to all their employees.

Today (May 19, 2009) Senator Mary Landrieu testified on the U.S. Senate floor delivering news of changes that have been made in the Small Business Administration along with additional proposed changes. She named in particular New Mexico auto dealer Bob Cockerham (Car World Kia) who members of AutoDealerPeople.com and members of my personal network supported with hundreds of e-mails.

I have had the pleasure of meeting Dale Pollack and have seen first hand the passion he has for his Vauto. It like a memeber of his family. He is strickly a car guy helping other car guy's become successful. I have also been introduced to First Look, both are good prodcuts and do what they say they will do. However, the one difference between First Look and Vauto is that First Look doesn't come with Dale Pollack and that is a major factor as to why Schaefer and Strohminger is a Vauto user.

The team at VAuto continues to wow me and our team with competitive advantages using their tool. We have increased our turns, take more trades, price better, and continue to grow our used car business. We were actually able to take our entire used car operation to one-price no negotiation, using their tool to price with accuracy.
I have had the opportunity to work with auto exchange, first look, and several other low tech, and high tech used vehicle tools. We need to maintain a…

We know how difficult it is to manage a preowned inventory.
Why take the risk of getting yourself into having nothing but water in you inventory?
Why price yourself out of the market?
Why do you stock units that make no sense in your market?
Do you really need a middle man to trade in you customer's vehicles?
I could go on and on about hundreds of good reasons to convince you to be part of the new revolution in the car business, but do I need to…

All I can say is that the culture in my organization has been completely changed(for the better) since we became a Vauto client. Not only is the product great, but the customer support is second to none.
They care about my dealership's success as if it were their own. Dale Pollak is a world class leader and innovator and although I have not used the competitive software available, there would be no reason to research it any more than I did, prior to going with Vauto.
I have also…

This is a follow up to my first blog post.
I have been in the business for 6 years now. I think I have learned a lot about the business and people.
When I started selling it was an eye opener to me how people act at a car dealer. I was such a lay down compared to the people who came in to buy from me. I never had the guts to talk to anyone the way people talk to me. You would think sales is a profession yet people do not treat a car salesman like a professional. In fact…

Having spent a large part of my career working mostly with auto dealers, dealer associations and to a lesser degree manufacturers, I am deeply saddened and somewhat angry at the current state of affairs facing the auto industry. Let me explain.
First of all, for the politically correct or squeamish, you may want to skip this post. Let’s start with the domestic manufacturers. The so-called Big Three of Chrysler, Ford and GM have done a much better job of building vehicles in the last…

OK, I just sat through the 41 minute GM media conference call. It told me nothing that I didn't already know, but it certainly gave Mark LeNeve the opportunity to do some damage control in the media.
The bottom line is that GM gave 1100 dealers notice today that their sales and service agreements will not be renewed in October 2010 when the existing agreements expire. He said the intent was to communicate this with dealers today so that they and GM could enjoy an "orderly wind down"…

Today, it is more important than ever to connect with your customers and prospects - not just to sell them - but to gather their opinion and show them that you value it. This is one thing that can help your dealership instill confidence in the minds of your consumers and stand apart from your competition.
When it comes to America’s auto consumers, we can all agree that things have changed. Buyers are more informed and expect more for their money. In fact, the way the public buys cars…

With the number of people that have recently lost their jobs, many through no fault of their own, there should be some talent available in the job market. I know this site has seen an increase in the number of resumes posted and those visiting the Job Connections Group.
Is it time to look at your weakest link and find a stronger one? Is it possible that the talent you've always wanted is now available at the price you can afford? Is it time to start fishing in the talent pool that is now…

My company manages the denied applicants for over 400 dealerships. When submitting the denials through RouteOne or our website, the salespersons email is supplied so when the customers credit has improved enough to get bought, the salesperson can be notified. It is alarming how many of these email addresses, input by the managers, are personal. 90 days from now, when the customer is now viable, and that salesperson has potentially moved on to another store, that deal is now in the hands of an…

This week several dealerships in our country will recieve the PINK Slip from GM, Where do we go from here?? How many months do we recieve to operate our stores as a new car dealership, what happens to our customer base when we cant service warranty related issues, what is a brand worth to a family operated, 2nd or 3rd generation dealership?
I fear the landscape across America will change greatly during the next 6 months, yet I question how closing so many stores will make any provider of…
