Looking for help and advice

I am looking for advice. There are many pros here on Auto Dealer People so I am hoping to get some input. As most of you know I sell cars for a large dealership. My question is when do you endorse the back end? Do you bring up the products during the sales process?
Many places suggest you take the customer through service to meet an adviser. Do we get into warranty wheel and tire etc? Do we sell the car first? I have my own answer but I would like to withhold it to see what people on this sight… Continue

Six years later sales is sill a tough racket

This is a follow up to my first blog post.

I have been in the business for 6 years now. I think I have learned a lot about the business and people.
When I started selling it was an eye opener to me how people act at a car dealer. I was such a lay down compared to the people who came in to buy from me. I never had the guts to talk to anyone the way people talk to me. You would think sales is a profession yet people do not treat a car salesman like a professional. In fact the management at many… Continue

Sales is a tough racket

I was working in the Aircraft industry for years. The industry pays well as aircraft parts produce large profits. Then came 9/11/2001 the industry as a whole took a major hit. I made it until 2003 before my number came up.I was laid off. I could not make the money I did outside of the aircraft industry with the skills I had.
My wife and kids were out of town when I was laid off. I decided I wanted to get into sales because I thought If I hustled I could make the type of money I needed to survive… Continue

So here's what I did like clockwork.....when I was showing the vehicle, I would "plant the seed" like Roger mentioned. Either when they asked about what type of warranty it came with or when I brought up what kind of warranty it came with..... Thi…

I always had the highest backend in the store. I always plant the warranty seed before we drive when I go over the factory warranties, and I found out their hot buttons so I could prep the finance guy so he could tailor his presentation. And never e…

Comment by Doug Stahl 1 second ago Delete Comment I think it's a good topic to ponder; however your sales people should be selling the "vehicle" as the product, not the "back-end products." The front-end is totally the vehicle and the back-end is up…

Your blog made me laugh a couple of times, but I understand it's a serious subject. First, I agree with Tom, it sounds like you might want to be looking at other stores. I'm in the process of trying to get back into a retail environment. The phone i…

My dealership sold twice as many Chevys as the closest competitor in our zone. I was giving examples over a six year period. Thhe problem is GM stopped paying spins and we are selling less cars per month so it is hard to hit certain bonus levels. Ou…

WOW!!! Sounds like you need to find another Dealership and NOT necessarily another career. While the experiences you have documented can and do happen at many dealerships, I would respectfully submit that there are dealerships out there that treat B…

To break it down further. Salesman should be on creating relationships. Your friends and family all know what you do. If you communicate with your friends and family their friends and family will see you and learn who you are. If you can create a na…

Stan: You refreshed my memory of all the craziness I've gone through in 19+ years in the car business! I started in 1990 at a Hyundai store ( not the best vehicle you could sell in 1990!). I was a Food & Beverage Director at a local hotel working 1…

Congratulations Stan, a great story. Your's echos what I have told salespeople for years, in that desire and effort will overcome "car experience", every time. Best of luck
