I know -- going to buy a car is just as bad as going to the Dentist. Or is it? Have you ever seen the TV Show MythBusters? In case you have not, it is a show about separating truth from urban legend. Greg Goebel said… - While I am disappointed to hear the requests for additional dollars, it is the same thing I am advising dealers to do for their own lines or floor plan needs. What I am most disturbed about, only for what it means to the dealers is the 'execution' of Saturn and Hummer franchises. If Saturn isn't sold by 3/31/09 their dealers become the next Olds stores, and the product, which is good, becomes undesirable and harder to finance. This all means a significant blood letting on the retail side.
I think GMs plan was to under-promise and over-achieve, and to that, with the union issues put to bed, I am very comfortable it will work.
Regarding Chrysler, if it wasn't for the dealers, I would say Cerberus made their own bed, let them lay in it. The problem is that there are far too many Chrysler retailers (and their teams) that will suffer if not die. I don't feel Chrysler is viable. They just don't have product. They have killed R&D, some of their latest products are just fugly (Sebring and Avenger), their attempt at bringing in small cars manufactured in China was stillborn, and their parent refuses to dump more money into it, but asks the government for bailout funds. Press is sharp as a tack, but I feel like it is smoke and mirrors at best. I don't want them to die for the dealers' sake, but my goodness their track record since the Daimler buyout has been brutal.
